새천년시대를 준비하면서 구약비평학의 나가아야 할 방향을 제시해준, 좀 지났지만, 여전히 강력한 호소력을 가진 책입니다. 시대와 저자, 본문과 독자라는 얽히고 섥힌 관계를 풀어나갔던 (창조적[역사비평 학자를 평가할때] 혹은 모방적[문학비평 학자를 평가할때])성서학자들의 고뇌를 비평적으로 평가합니다. 개인적인 생각으로는, 간단히 역사비평의 순진한 낭만을 지나가고, 주로 철학적 운동에 바탕을 둔 문학비평의 '과학'과 '자유'에 집중하고 있습니다. 그 흐름 가운데 애꿎은 '전도서'가 이리저리 (유익하게!) 실험대상이 되면서, 결국엔 '학문의 (교조주의적) 독단성'을 경계하는 해석자가 될것을 주문합니다.

"The task of criticism ... is not to be always producing new interpretations, but to explain interpretations on which readers can agree ... Instead of asking which method is 'right', we might ask what is really going on in the reader when he is using each of them, what kind of reading they belong to." (245f).

'독단'을 버리라는 가르침은 오늘의 세상살이에도 그대로 적용되는 금언이네요. 저자가 마지막으로 날리는 냉혹함은, 예언자의 그 무엇이 느껴지는, 하나의 일갈입니다: "That inquiry seems hardly to have begun yet in the biblical world, though it is already well advanced in secular criticism."(246)
