역사란 언제나 보편-완전하다기보다 선택적이며 절충적이다

"The so-called good periods are the ones into whose spirit the historian has penetrated, owing either to the existence of abundant evidence or to his own capacity for re-living the experience they enjoyed; the so-called bad periods are either those for which evidence is relatively scanty, or those whose life he cannot, for reasons arising out of his own experience and that of his age, reconstruct within himself."

역사란 언제나 보편-완전하다기보다 선택적이며 절충적이다. 그렇기에 온전한 '역사'란 절대로 기술할 수 없다. 그러나 역사가는, 넘을 수 없은 산을 바라보면서, 어떤 길은 가능한 선택이며 또 다른 어떤 길은 자멸하는 선택이라는 것을 알아낸다. 인류 혹은 자신이 속한 집단의 소위 말하는 '진보/발전'을 찾아가려는 노력이라면 그것은 후자에 해당한다. 역사는 우리가 어떠한 사람이었는가를 위로받거나, 우리가 어떤 사람이 되어야만 하는가를 강제당하는 도구가 아니라, 시간과 존재를 끊임없이 생각하게 만드는 인간의 고결한 정신이다.
