"When biblical scholars reconstruct history, they do so using the same methods as secular historians. But a great deal of their time is not spent in reconstructing history anyway, and to call biblical criticism the historical-critical method skews our awareness of this. The methods that historians do use are seldom used in the cause of positivism by most historians working today, and nor are they so used by biblical scholars who use them. The term 'the historical-critical method' is not the best one to use in analyzing the work of biblical scholars, raising as it does the expectation that such work will be essentially skeptical and reductionist. A grest good would be served by reverting to the older term 'biblical criticism.'"
